Buying a new home is an exciting opportunity to create the look you have always wanted. Starting from a blank slate, there is not a doubt that it is fun to pick out colors, textures and designs from a wide array of options. However, sometimes those large selections can be quite daunting, especially when it comes to window coverings. From blinds to sheers to heavy curtains or shutters, there are many options. Looks aren’t the only thing to take into consideration either. Costs, intended use of the room and privacy needs are also factors to consider when making a decision.

The Cost Factor

When buying a new home, you are probably up against a tight budget. Often, window coverings are an afterthought once flooring, cabinets and lighting options have been picked. You can afford window coverings on any budget; however, you may have to compromise when it comes to what you need versus what you can afford. Mini-blinds are going to be one of the least expensive options, while full window shutters will cost a pretty penny. You could opt for shutters in the rooms most important to you, such as the master bedroom, and mini-blinds for secondary bedrooms and baths. Doing this may allow you an acceptable compromise so that you get the shades you want while still coming in under budget.

The World of Mini Blinds

If you decide to go with mini-blinds, you may find that you still have many decisions yet to make. You can get 1” to 3” blinds, and they can be aluminum or wood. Even then, you will have to decide if you want colored blinds or a wood finish. Faux white wood 2” blinds are a very popular choice in today’s homes, as they will blend with most décor that a homeowner would choose. If you are considering sheer curtains, you might be interested to find you can also get mini-blinds covered in fabric so that even when opened, they will filter the light that enters the room.

Dealer or Department Store?

When purchasing window coverings for your new home, you will probably be given the option to buy directly through the home seller. Buying directly from a dealer is not the same as buying through the home builder’s interior design center. You will pay a substantial mark up for the use of a designer’s expertise and opinion. Consider foregoing the window covering option and waiting until escrow is closed. Buy your shades through a mail order catalog and you’ll save substantially. You can also shop from the comfort of your home, without a salesperson pressuring you to buy the latest and newest in home comfort and design.
