What is Swine Flu? (H1N1)

Influenza A (H1N1) virus is a subtype of influenza virus A and the most common cause of influenza (flu) in humans. This virus was originally referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs in North America. But further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. Other countries, including Mexico and Canada, have reported people sick with this new virus. This virus is spreading from person-to-person much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread through coughing and sneezing.

Symptom of the Swine Flu (H1N1)

H1N1 flu symptom is similar to seasonal flu, these includes:

* Fever
* Cough
* Sore throat
* Runny or stuffy nose
* Body aches
* Headache
* Chills and fatigue

People that have been infected with this new H1N1 virus has also reported diarrhea and vomiting. The only way to find out if you have infected with H1N1 virus is through a swab test.

What to do if you are sick

If you have any of the above symptoms, Stay at home at home and avoid contact with people. Wear a mask before going to consult your doctor, avoid contact with people to minimize the spreading of your illness. Seek emergency medical care if you are experience any of following signs such as calling ambulance. (SG - 993)

Signs that required urgent medical attention include:

* Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
* Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
* Sudden dizziness
* Confusion
* Severe or persistent vomiting
* Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

Everyday actions to stay healthy

* Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing with a tissue. Dispose the tissue in the trash bin after use.

* Wash your hands often with soap or hand sanitizer after you cough or sneeze. It is a good practice to wash your hand before having your meal.

* Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs will spread in this ways.

* Try to avoid close contact with unwell/sick people and avoid crowded places.

* Having a healthy diets or supplement to boosts your immune system.

* Get the latest news of the virus before planning any overseas trip.
