It
has long been debated whether there is a correlation between the
viewing internet pornography and actual child molestation. A
government study suggests definitive evidence that sheds light on
this controversial subject. The study was conducted by the Federal
Bureau of Prisons and found that 85 percent of convicted internet sex
offenders had committed acts of sexual abuse against minors, ranging
from inappropriate touching to rape.
The
study is the first of its kind looking at online offenders’ sexual
behavior done by prison therapists who were actively performing
treatment. Previous studies only guessed and placed figures at 30 to
40 percent of those arrested for possessing child pornography also
had molested children. However, this study, conducted on inmates who
had been arrested for possession and distribution of child
pornography, puts the numbers much higher.
Perhaps
the most shocking and controversial assertion of the paper was that
“many internet child pornography offenders may be undetected child
molesters.” A portion of the men who have been convicted of sexual
abuse admit that internet child pornography fueled their urges.
According to an article in the New York Times, a convicted
pedophile serving a 14-year sentence in a Canadian federal prison
admitted that looking at child pornography didn’t gratify this
sexual desires, but fueled them. “Because there is no way I can
look at a picture of a child on a video screen and not get turned on
by that and want to do something about it,” he said. “I knew that
in my mind. I knew that in my heart. I didn’t want it to happen,
but it was going to happen.”
Many
people believe that we all have hidden character flaws that, unless
they are triggered, will lay dormant and be of no harm. However, when
triggered, these flaws are inflamed and can quickly get out of
control. Many people who view internet porn find themselves doing
things they never thought we were capable of. This explains some of
the behaviors seen on “To Catch a Predator” where almost all of
the culprits would say that they couldn’t believe that they had
fallen into these behaviors. Many people, recognizing the potential
propensity of some dark behavior, choose to put up barriers rather
than realizing these triggers.
